Application Criteria
Given the diverse needs of the Foundation’s communities, it would be inappropriate to define applicant criteria too tightly. However, guidelines are necessary in order to minimize requests that are clearly not consistent with the Foundation’s intentions or capabilities.
In an attempt to provide guidance, the following are suggested:
- Organizations that do not discriminate based on Federal criteria.
- Priority will be given to Claremont, Charlestown, Cornish, New Hampshire.
- Secondary consideration will be given to surrounding communities in New Hampshire and Vermont.
- Organizations must be Section 501(c) (3) IRS Code approved.
Requests from statewide organizations may be considered, but the decision process will center on benefits to the communities listed above. While exceptions may be warranted for some organizations, the Foundation does not fund requests for operating funds unless they are related to start-up expenses for “seed” programs and projects.
As a general rule, the Foundation does not fund grant requests from individuals, religious organizations, or municipalities. Grant requests are encouraged from civic, arts, social service, health and affordable housing organizations. The Foundation’s Board may allocate available funds by type or activity. The Foundation will consider multi-year pledge requests, however, this practice must be limited and monitored carefully due to the restrictions this places on annual grant making.
Size of grants is generally in the range of $1,000 to $5,000. Applicants may apply for amounts outside of these guidelines if documentation supports the nature of the request.
Within one year of receipt of funds, grantees will be required to forward to the Foundation a certification that funds were used as stated in the application. If funds have not been used, the organization must file for an extension for use of funds or return the funds to the Foundation.
