The second annual Community Regeneration Day will be held Saturday, August 14 from 8:00 to noon at the Claremont Saving Bank branch at 145 Broad Street. Again this year, residents will be asked to reuse and recycle their items as well as donate money and goods to area nonprofits.
“Our inaugural Community Regeneration Day celebration was a huge success and it really got people thinking about how they can control their impact on the environment,” said Candace Crawford, senior vice president of finance for Claremont Savings Bank. “Last year, we shredded enough paper to fill an entire truck and collected several carloads worth of coats, mittens and other items for the needy. The Lions Club even collected 340 pairs of gently-used eyeglasses. ”
Several organizations will solicit donations or offer services that day. Claremont Savings Bank will be collecting DVDs to give to veterans and will offer shredding old documents (up to five cartons). The Claremont Soup Kitchen will collect food donations for the needy. Good Beginnings will accept baby items and products. The Claremont Lions Club will collect eye glasses for reuse and the United Way will accept coats, hats and mittens for their “Keep our community warm” program.
Among the other efforts on Community Regeneration Day, a local Brownie troop will recycle aluminum cans, Families in Transition will collect clothing and toiletries, and the Turning Points Network will accept re-usable quality cellular phones. Animal Control will be collecting pet food, toys, and other pet supplies. And Wincycle will accept electronics and other small appliances (a small fee will apply).
Organizers say participants will not be accepting furniture, books, or large appliances.
